I Survived the Hawkins Lab Purge: A Dead by Daylight Retrospective

Dead by Daylight's Stranger Things removal gutted Hawkins National Laboratory, leaving players bloodied by map loss and compensation chaos in 2021.

Let me paint you a picture. It is late 2021 and I am crouching in a hallway inside Hawkins National Laboratory, listening to the Demogorgon’s wet little feet slap toward me through the flickering dark. But the real horror is not the monster—it is the fact that this entire map is about to be ripped out of Dead by Daylight like a bandage made of pure sadness. I was not emotionally prepared then, and honestly, I have not fully recovered even now.

When the news first dropped, I thought it was a prank. A licensed chapter leaving a live service game? In this economy? But no, the Stranger Things content was really cleaning out its locker and heading for the Upside Down. Behaviour Interactive was wrapping up its beloved collaboration before the November 17 storefront cutoff, and the in-game shop started looking like a chaotic yard sale.

Cosmetics and characters got discounts, and a giveaway floated around for players to win some of the Stranger Things content for free. But the scariest part was Hawkins National Laboratory itself. It was not salvageable through microtransactions. You could not buy it, beg for it, or cram it into a locker. Once it vanished from the storefront, the map was simply gone, leaving only memories and a lot of flashlight clicking.

To soften the blow, Behaviour cranked up the map’s rotation that month. That meant I got to die in the Upside Down more often than a teenager in a horror movie, which was great for my playtime and terrible for my blood pressure. Those buzzing lights and slimy flesh walls in the underground complex still live rent-free in my skull.

Now let’s talk about the offering fiasco, because this is where the community truly delivered peak chaotic energy. The Hawkins National Laboratory ID offerings had already been disabled due to performance issues—classic Dead by Daylight, right? Then Behaviour removed those offerings from players’ inventories entirely. To make up for it, they gave out varying sums of Bloodpoints based on how many offerings you happened to be hoarding at the time.

This created three basic types of players:

  • The Hoarders: Rolling in Bloodpoints like foggy little Scrooge McDucks.

  • The Spendthrifts: Screaming into the Entity’s void because they used their offerings like normal people.

  • The Confused: Learning about the entire situation after it had already ended.

I fell firmly into the second group, and no amount of self-care could fix that. Players rightly pointed out that if they had known compensation would equal the number of offerings they held, they would have stockpiled those little cards from the Bloodweb like doomsday preppers. Instead, plenty of us watched our Hawkins IDs blink out of existence and got a modest apology for our trouble.

Then came the map’s grand farewell weekend. Between November 12 and November 15, 2021, Behaviour boosted the Hawkins Lab rotation so players could get some closure. I played more matches that weekend than I care to admit. Most of them ended with me being sacrificed while humming the Stranger Things theme and wondering where it all went wrong.

Here is a tidy little breakdown of the chaos:

Content Item Fate in November 2021
Stranger Things characters and cosmetics Discounted until the storefront cutoff
Hawkins National Laboratory map Removed and not purchasable or salvageable
Hawkins Lab ID offerings Deleted from inventories, converted into Bloodpoints
My emotional stability Permanently damaged, not refundable

At the time, the upcoming Portrait of a Murder chapter was supposed to be the shiny new distraction. And sure, a new chapter is nice. But it felt a bit like being handed a new pet after your old dog ran into another dimension. I needed time to grieve.

Now, from the calm and totally stable vantage point of 2026, I can look back and laugh. Stranger Things did eventually return to the Fog in 2023, bringing the Demogorgon, Steve, Nancy, and that cursed underground map back with it. So if you were one of the poor souls who spent your Hawkins offerings back in 2021, just know the universe eventually corrected itself.

I, however, still side-eye any item in Dead by Daylight that claims it will be removed. Some scars do not fade, and I will absolutely hoard every suspicious offering from now on.
